Race me to winner's circle

Owner Basil Kellis was able to make the 1,551 mile trek from his home in Wells, Maine, despite inclement weather, to Pompano Park just in time to see his horse, Race Me Valerie score a 7-1 upset win by a neck over Townline Lily in the $10,000 Mares Open Handicap Pace Friday.

The feature started off with Golden Falcon N (David Ingraham) shooting to the early lead past Hyde Park Hussie N (Anthony Napolitano) and leading the field to the opening quarter mile in :27. They raced single file past the half in :55.3 and in the backstretch Napolitano gave up the pocket seat with Hyde Park Hussie N to challenge pacesetter Golden Falcon N first-over and gave cover to Race Me Valerie and driver Kevin Wallis to the three-quarters in 1:24.

On the final turn, Wallis tipped Race Me Valerie three wide and was closing well on the outside as Bruce Ranger shot up the rail with Townline Lily to be second in the photo finish. Hyde Park Hussie N was third.

It was the ninth win this year for Race Me Valerie, a 5-year-old mare by Ball And Chain who is trained by Linda Wallis and is co-owned by Kellis with Yvette Prudenzano. (Pompano Park)
