Racing at Tioga Downs

An enthusiastic, overflow crowd of 6,000 patrons filled Tioga Downs Friday night for the track’s opening harness racing card of 11 races. The night’s feature race, a $12,500 Open Trot, went to Speed Pilot and driver Stephane Bouchard in 1:57.4.

The mile was a lifetime mark for the 5-year-old CR Aviator gelding owned by Francis Rapone and Thomas, Betty and Christopher Buckley. Trained by Louis Rapone Jr., it was Speed Pilot’s sixth win of the season in 16 starts.

The night’s first race, the $9,000 first leg of the Southern Fear Pacing Series, went to So Real and Bruce Aldrich Jr. in 1:55.1. The 7-year-old Artsplace gelding scored his third victory of the year in eight starts for owner Roland Martin. Aldrich also trains the early track record holder.

Despite a forecast for rain, there was only a brief downfall early in the evening. But the temperature was cool for the opening night’s action.
