Railee shows its possible

After grinding out an extended first-over trip, the 5-year-old Florida-bred gelding Railee Possible rolled down the stretch to score his third win of the year in Monday’s $10,000 Open Handicap Trot at Pompano Park.

Driven from post four by David Ingraham, Railee Possible quickly settled in fifth place as a three-horse skirmish developed for the lead with Rovasreadytorumble (Walter Ross Jr.), Battleshoe Victor (Bruce Ranger) and Byzanz (Daryl Bier) all gunning for the front.

Battleshoe Victor eventually claimed the lead after a solid opening quarter mile in :27.4, but as the field moved by the grandstand for the first time, the Illinois-bred son of Valley Victor yielded the top spot to Byzanz, who had been parked out for three-eighths of a mile.

As Byzanz showed the way through a half mile in :56.4, Railee Possible was flushed out from fifth by the lone mare in the field, Victor’s Pursuit (Mickey Mc Nichol), and subsequently began his methodical first-over march. Byzanz retained his front-end position through a three-quarters split in 1:26, but the German-bred gelding’s lead was rapidly diminishing as Railee Possible continued to gain ground on the outside.

As the trotters moved through the final turn, Railee Possible wrestled the lead away from Byzanz and entered the stretch with a one-length advantage. Battleshoe Victor shook free in the final yards to make a late surge along the pylons at Railee Possible, but the leader was never truly threatened in the lane and crossed the wire 1 ½ lengths the best while stopping the timer in 1:55.3, one-fifth of a second off his lifetime mark.

Railee Possible returned $8.40, $2.40, $2.20 for the victory. Battleshoe Victor paid $2.20, $2.20 for second, while Byzanz brought in $3 for third.

Owned by Frank and Inge Smith of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and trained by Veral Bowman, Railee Possible has visited the winner’s circle in three of six starts at Pompano this year. With his victory on Monday, the son of Anythings Possible moved past the $130,000 mark in career earnings. (Pompano Park)
