Rainbow Blue wins Matron

Return Home
November 16, 2004 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Rainbow Blue capped off her outstanding year with another impressive victory Monday night at Dover Downs, winning the $159,675 Matron final for 3-year-old filly pacers in a track record 1:51.

With Ron Pierce driving, Rainbow Blue shot right for the lead but found themselves locked in a tussle with a game Artbitration and driver Pat Berry. Rainbow Blue continued on to a :26.3 opening quarter while Artbitration kept at her flank unable to drop into a hole. Rainbow Blue reached the half in :54 and it was there that Artbitration began to tire. At that point George Brennan moved Glowing Report up on the outside and dropped into the two hole.

Rainbow Blue reached the three-quarters in 1:22.2 with Glowing Report tucked right behind, both drawing away from the competition. Down the stretch Rainbow Blue opened up on Glowing Report, crossing the wire two lengths in front. It was 13 lengths back to third-place finisher L Dee's Val (John Campbell).

The win was the 19th of the year in 20 starts for Rainbow Blue as she made her final statement to sway voters to mark her name on the ballot for Horse of the Year. The effort also pushed her 2004 earnings past the $1.1 million mark for trainer George Teague, his sister, Brenda, and Kevin and Ron Fry's K & R Racing.
