Real Velocity, guided by Jason Dillander, drove down the stretch to win the $23,000 purse of the Fillies and Mares Invitational Friday, July 11 at Hoosier Park. The win was Real Velocity’s 10th of the season in 14 competitions. Camphor Hanover, with Brad Hanners in the sulky, raced out of the gate to take the lead over the field of seven. Reaching the quarter-mile mark in :26.1, Camphor Hanover held a one-length lead over Me and My Baby, controlled by Joe Essig Jr. Charging towards the halfway mark in a time of :55.1, the favorite, Real Velocity, raced up to take the lead. Coming to the three-quarter mile mark in 1:23.3, Real Velocity held strong as Camphor Hanover and Me and My Baby competed for second. Real Velocity started to pull away from the competition. Approaching the finish, Camphor Hanover made a late push, but it was not enough as Real Velocity crossed the finish in 1:51.3. Camphor Hanover and JD’s Lady Lynn, driven by John Taylor, completed the trifecta. “She (Real Velocity) was really good tonight,” said Dillander. “It’s the best she has been recently. When racing, it helps knowing the horse and her capabilities on the race track.” Owned by TKO Racing Stable of Greenfield, Ind. and trained by Trent Stohler, Real Velocity has earned over $138,000 this season and nearly $363,000 in her lifetime. The four-year-old mare by Real Artist returned $2.60, $2.10, and $2.10 for her latest effort. (Hoosier Park)
