Rebelman wins at Hoosier

April 16, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

For the second consecutive week, Rebelman captured the $23,000 Invitational Pace at Hoosier Park, this time doing so in a lifetime best 1:50.3. The 5-year-old gelded son of Electric Yankee defeated Mypanmar, Premieronbroadway and Foxy Maneuver in the winning effort.

Starting from post five in the evening's feature, driver Joe Essig Jr. sent Rebelman to the lead before being shuffled as Foxy Maneuver took command during a quick :25.4 first panel. On the backstretch driver Ricky Macomber Jr. pulled Mypanmar from fourth and sent the five year old to the top as the field reached the half in :54.2.

As the favorite lead the field to the three-quarter pole (1:22.4) I'm All Jazz (Andy Shetler) and Premieronbroadway (Josh Sutton) had advanced on the outside, burying Rebelman third along the rail.

"I wasn't confident I'd have room. I didn't think the one horse (I'm All Jazz) would go that far," Essig said. "There were a lot of horses and nowhere to go."

Mypanmar and Foxy Maneuver both drifted from the rail, opening a seam for Essig and Rebelman. The duo charged up the pylons to head Mypanmar at the wire. Premieronbroadway finished third and Foxy Maneuver was fourth.

"That's the first he's ever been trapped," said breeder, trainer and owner Steve Brannan. "He swelled up like a balloon coming out of the turn."

Rebelman is now two-for-two on the season. The winning time eclipsed his previous best of 1:51.1, set last year at Hoosier Park.
