Red Bow Tie dies

May 30, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Red Bow Tie, a Florida-sired gelding who became one of the sport's top pacers, was humanely deestroyed at the Ontario farm of top driver Luc Ouellette.

The magnificent dark bay gelding had been diagnosed with the debilitating disease EPM, and despite all efforts to save the horse, his condition worsened in recent days.

"He was basically in intensive care since last Monday. We did everything we could for him, but he lost the use of his hind legs," said an obviously devastated Ouellette, who brought Red Bow Tie to Ontario from New Jersey more than a year ago to live out his retirement years in splendor. "He was a very special horse to our family as he was on the racetrack. We're very grateful to have had him for as long as we did."

Ouellette, Canada's 2004 Driver of the Year, also wanted to acknowledge local veterinarians Dr. David Goodrow and Dr. Boland at the University of Guelph for all of their care on the 11-year-old pacer. "Dr. Goodrow was incredible. He went beyond the call of duty. He made this horse his priority all week."

Red Tow Tie retired in 2002 with 59 wins and career earnings of $2,673,920 in 136 starts, many of them while partnered with Ouellette in the sulky. (by WEG)
