Red Mile $78,000 richer

The Red Mile's budget appears to be more than $78,000 richer this year after the Kentucky General Assembly passed a budget for fiscal 2006-07 that abolishes the daily track fees and instead has the money paid to the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority (KHRA) coming from the state's General Fund.



Kentucky Thoroughbred tracks currently pay a daily fee of $3,500 for every live race day to the KHRA while Quarter Horse tracks and harness tracks pay $1,750. The Red Mile is scheduled to race 43 days of harness racing and two Quarter Horse programs this year (45x$1,750=$78,750). The total amount generated annually by the fees comes to approximately $1.2 million.



The budget is only for one year and does not include 2007-08, but Sen. Damon Thayer, who was a proponent of abolishing the track fees, has been quoted as saying he plans to do the same for the next budget.
