Red Mile announcer Prewitt recovering from surgery

The Red Mile announcer Gabe Prewitt is recovering Saturday morning in a Lexington hospital after having emergency surgery to remove his appendix on Friday. Prewitt, 26, was stricken midway through the races at The Red Mile Thursday evening and was taken to the hospital, where doctors eventually performed the surgery.

Prewitt called the first half of the race card before he was replaced in the announcer's booth by the track's race secretary, Billy Perkins, who is a veteran announcer who has called the races at several tracks over his career. Perkins will now be in the booth for Sunday night's $2.4 million Night of Champions which features eight $300,000 Kentucky Sire Stakes finals for 2 and 3 year olds.

Prewitt was expected to remain in the hospital for a couple of days and it is unknown at this time when he will return to The Red Mile's announcer's booth. Meadowlands announcer Sam McKee is the regular racecaller for the two-week Grand Circuit stand that begins Tuesday, Sept. 29.
