Red Mile to remember the sport's greats Sunday

The Red Mile has been a favorite destination for horsemen and trotting fans for more than a century, and on Sunday, Kentucky Futurity Day, the track will remember many who made the trek there annually and loved every minute of it.
 
Since last fall's Grand Circuit meet some of The Red Mile's biggest fans passed away. They are:
  • Lloyd Arnold, a breeder-owner who in recent years brought a motor home and stayed the entire two weeks of Grand Circuit racing;
  • John Cashman Jr., president of The Red Mile and Tattersalls for many years;
  • Herman Brickel, who served as race secretary and in the judges stand and after retiring never missed a Grand Circuit meet;
  • Stan Bergstein, who participated and organized the popular Harness Tracks of America art auction held at The Red Mile;
  • Gene Riegle, the Hall of Famer who brought top colts and fillies to the track for many years and won the Kentucky Futurity with Arnie Almahurst;
  • Stew Firlotte, who raced many greats at the track, including Ralph Hanover and Town Pro;
  • Geoffrey Stein, who was part of the management team to revitalize the Tattersalls Sale and organized the Lexington Selected Sales Company;
  • H.A. "Andy" Grant, a breeder, owner and big fan of The Red Mile;
  • R. Peter Heffering, who raced top horses at the track and attended the yearling sales;
  • Tom Thompson, a Delaware County Fair/Little Brown Jug and Grand Circuit official, who never missed at Lexington meet;
  • Paul Spears, breeder, owner, and principal of the Standardbred Horse Sales Company, who always attended the races with his wife, Josephine;
  • Bart Glass, a Kentucky breeder who advised many other Standardbred breeders;
  • Charlie Roberts, a veteran blacksmith who worked on the backstretch at The Red Mile;
  • Jim Ewart, a race secretary who loved his trips to The Red Mile with his wife, Sandy.
