A And G'sconfusion, making her first start since winning the She's A Great Lady final at Mohawk, became the sport's newest world-record holder with a 1:50.3 victory in the first of five Bluegrass divisions for 2-year-old filly pacers Wednesday afternoon at The Red Mile.
Although the temperature may have "cooled" into the mid 80s after a series of 90-plus degree days in Lexington, the humidity remained high on Tuesday. Leaving from post one in the first $90,400 Bluegrass split, A And G'sconfusion got a perfect trip from driver David Miller before moving to the lead in mid-stretch over eventual runner-up Desirable Cindy and driver Mike Lachance. Lake Shore Drive finished third for Dan Shetler.
A And G'sconfusion lowered the previous mark for freshman filly pacers on a mile track held by Cabrini Hanover by two-fifths of a second. It was the first start for the daughter of Allamerican Native since capturing the $743,000 She's A Great Lady Sept. 1. The Mark Capone trainee now has three wins and two seconds in five starts. She is owned by Willy Tomlin's A&G Stable.
The second $90,400 Bluegrass division went to Beachy Girl, who under a confident drive by Jody Jamieson, scored by open lengths in 1:51. See And Be Seen and driver Brian Sears held off Ready To Win and Yannick Gingras to take runner-up honors. Ironically, Beachy Girl's time would have equaled Cabrini Hanover's world record had it not been broken three races earlier by A And Gsconfusion.
A daughter of Real Desire, Beachy Girl won for the eighth time in 10 starts this year. After finishing fourth to A And Gsconfusion in the She's A Great Lady final, Beachy Girl rebounded by winning the $200,000 Kentucky Sire Stakes final at The Red Mile on Sept. 9.
Trained by Joe Seekman, Beachy Girl is owned by Joe Seekman Racing and Hal Hewitt.
John Campbell moved Chocolate Art to the lead in the final turn and the daughter of Artiscape held off her rivals the rest of the way to win the third $91,400 division in 1:53.3. Lightning Treasure was second for Ron Pierce with Ideal Nectarine and Andy Miller taking third.
The time equaled Chocolate Art's career best, set in early August at the Meadowlands. Noel Daley trains the winner for owner Patricia Stable.
Andy Miller moved Kelly's Keepsake to the lead shortly before reaching the :56.4 half, and then rebuffed the first-over bid by Conchita Hanover to win the fourth $91,400 division in 1:53.2.
A daughter of Sportsmaster, Kelly's Keepsake was coming off a win in the $260,000 Orange & Blue final at Balmoral Park Sept. 15. Her win Wednesday was her fifth in 14 starts this year, increasing her earnings to more than $210,000.
"She's had a tough month but she's seemed to step up to the challenge," said Miller afterward.
Miller's brother, Erv, trains Kelly's Keepsake for owners Jack and Peggy Hood, Mystical Marker Farms and Ken Duffy.
The final $91,400 Bluegrass division went to Good News Lady, who is trained by Jimmy Takter, the conditioner of Cabrini Hanover whose world record fell in the first division. Mike Lachance was in the sulky behind Good News Lady who overcame a slow opening quarter of :29.3 to go on to win in 1:52.3. Up Front Bethann finished second for John Campbell.
A daughter of Western Ideal, Good News Lady is owned by Brittany Farms, Val D'Or Farms and Christina Takter. The win was her fourth in seven starts, increasing her earnings to more than $147,000. The time lowered her previous mark by a full second set last week in a Simpson division at The Red Mile.
