Artistic Fella set some strong fractions, but Stonebridge Regal [$47.60, $14.40, $6.00], who was first off the gate, was first across the wire in the $50,000 Graduate prep race on Saturday night at the Meadowlands, winning over Artistic Fella in 1:48.1.

Driver John Campbell fired the 22-1 shot to the top in a :26.4 opening quarter, then yielded to Artistic Fella’s bold backstretch brush and sat contently in the pocket through fractions of :53.3 and 1:21.1.  With three-sixteenths of the mile to go, Campbell tipped Stonebridge Regal out and he blew by Artistic Fella, driven by Andy Miller, for a three-quarter length win in a career best 1:48.1.  Total Truth [$5.20, $2.80] held his ground for third.

"It was his third start back and he is on the road to improvement,” Campbell said.  “I was a little disappointed in him last week [finished fifth in the Classic Series].  He is one horse who, if you leave with him from the gate, you will get a much better race out of him.”

Stonebridge Regal recorded his 15th win in 40 career starts and boosted his bankroll to $918,343.  Trainer Bob McIntosh shares ownership of the 5-year-old Artsplace stallion with co-owners Robert Kauffman of Wellington, Florida; Angie Stiller of Arva, Ontario; and W Springtime Racing Stable [Wendy Spring] of Johnstown, New York.

The eight horses in the prep race will join Lis Mara, who opted for the week off, in next Saturday’s $285,000 Graduate Final.  Joining the aforementioned horses will be Boulder Creek, who raced first-over in the prep, JK CU Later, Load The Dice, Shark Gesture and Western Ace.
