Making his first appearance of 2008, the 3-year-old colt trotter Deweycheatumnhowe, the reigning divisional champion and winter-book choice as Hambletonian favorite, coasted to a 10-length, 1:54 qualifying victory at the Meadowlands Thursday morning.

A perfect 10-for-10 last year on his way to Dan Patch Award honors as the best 2-year-old colt trotter in the U.S., Deweycheatumnhowe led at every call in Thursday’s qualifier for trainer-driver Ray Schnittker, tripping the quarter timers in :29.2, :58.3 and 1:25.3. Opening up a five-length lead at the stretch call, Dewey doubled the victory margin with a final quarter of :28.2.

Owned by Schnittker, Ted Gewertz, Charles Iannazzo and the Deweycheatumnhowe Stable, Dewey earned $936,191 last year, the most ever won by a freshman colt trotter. The son of Muscle Yankee's biggest victories came in the Valley Victory and Breeders Crown finals.

Earlier on the qualifying card, three of last year’s leading 3-year-old colt pacers, Kinetic Yankee, Kenneth J and Sutter Hanover, finished one-two-three, respectively. Andy Miller was in the sulky behind Kinetic Yankee, who crossed the wire first in 1:53.2, 1 ½ lengths better than Kenneth J, with Sutter Hanover third.
