Rembrandt Spur wins again

World Champion Rembrandt Spur called on every bit of his talent and moxie Friday to thwart two serious challenges and capture the $25,000 Preferred Handicap Trot at The Meadows.
 
Rembrandt Spur shares (with Shermans Mountain) the world record of 1:53.3 for 3-year-old geldings on a 5/8-mile track, and he holds or shares four Meadows’ track records. But when trainer/driver Dick Stillings sent the 4-year-old son of Pegasus Spur-Marty E to the lead Friday, his distinguished resume didn’t impress the challengers.
 
First up was Triumphant Caviar, a winner of more than $500,000 lifetime who got to within a neck of Rembrandt Spur. Their duel set the stage for the late brush of the 61-1 Winning Mister, who had all the late momentum.
 
Rembrandt Spur dug in to defeat Winning Mister by a head in 1:54, with Triumphant Caviar third. Roy Davis owns Rembrandt Spur, who extended his career bankroll to $235,603.
