Remember the Seahawks

January 26, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Although the 3-year-old gelding pacer Steeler has been receiving plenty of media attention as Super Bowl XL approaches between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks (you can catch an interview involving the horse at www.wtae.com), let's not forget horses named Seahawk--which according to the USTA has been used twice.

The first Sea Hawk registered was a foal of 1954 who had a non-descript racing career. The other Sea Hawk--a foal of 1976 who is a son of Meadow Skipper--also had a brief career, earning a mark of 1:58.2 at The Red Mile in 1979 and amassed $28,166 in earnings. Ironically, Steeler, who just missed qualifying for this week's Clyde Hirt Series final at the Meadowlands and will instead start in the consolation, has career earnings just $592 higher at $28,758.

The 1976 foal Sea Hawk went on to a breeding career in which his fastest foal was Golden Sea Bird, who set his mark of 1:57.1 while a 4 year old in 1986. Golden Sea Bird was also Sea Hawk's richest progeny with $62,899 amassed in earnings in a career that ended in 1987.

Although there have been about 35 other horses using "Sea Hawk" of some form in its name, it's the Walnut Hall Ltd. and Denim Stable-bred Sea Hawk Hall, a 3-year-old son of Western Hanover out of the mare Sensational Lil, who is the most recent (there is also a yearling filly in 2006 named Seahawk Carolyn). Sensational Lil was a decent mare, having competed in the preferred ranks at The Meadows in the late 1990s, and her son Sea Hawk Hall, who is in trainer Jim Campbell's barn, has made four lifetime starts.

Sea Hawk Hall was a $75,000 yearling purchase by Arlene and Jules Siegel, but has since changed hands twice. He is currently owned by the Free Pickle Stable of Pennsylvania. He made three starts last year at two, with only a third-place finish and $527 to show for it. This year Sea Hawk Hall has made just one appearance, that being a second-place finish in a qualifier at Freehold on Jan. 4.
