Rich race under saddle

January 23, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The $900,000 Prix de Cournulier was won by Jag de Bellouet, the favorite for the Prix d'Amerique on Jan. 30 but he was tested by Scarlet Knight, the winner of the 2001 Hambletonian, who finished a strong second in his first race ever under saddle.

The time was a mile rate of 1:59 over 2,700 meters on a cold day in Paris. Scarlet Knight was raced conservatively at the rail and did not have racing room until the final quarter-mile. He gained ground throughout the homestretch.

Scarlet Knight is trained by Stefan Melander, who had previously indicated that he would not enter the Pine Chip son in the Prix d'Amerique. After the stallion's big effort in the monte race, he has changed his mind.
