Rick Sams to head new laboratory in Kentucky

Following HFL Sport Science’s announcement that it has been awarded the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission’s drug testing program from 2011, it can now announce that the Laboratory Director is to be Professor Rick Sams - currently  the Program Director at the Florida Racing Laboratory.

 

Dr. Sams is no stranger to harness racing. For many years he ran the lab at The Ohio State University and managed the testing at the Delaware County Fair each fall during Little Brown Jug week. He also attended high school in Lebanon, Ohio, with Corwin Nixon's daughter, Karen.

 

HFL Sport Science previously announced that it has been selected by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to perform drug testing and analysis from February 2011 at its new laboratory facilities in Lexington, Kentucky, the “Horse Capital of the Word.”  HFL is now proud to announce that the first director of the new Laboratory will be Professor Richard Sams, Ph.D., currently the Program Director of the Florida Racing Laboratory of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida.

 

Professor Sams is a leader in the field of equine drug testing.  He brings over 30 years experience in developing and validating new testing methods as well as studying pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs and other substances in racehorses and other animals. He has held his current position at the University of Florida since 2006.  Prior to 2006, he was Professor and Director of the Analytical Toxicology Laboratory of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the Ohio State University, a position he held since 1978.
