The 2014 Darke County Fair in Greenville, Ohio, concludes Friday, Aug. 22, with an 11-race program. Post time for the first race is 7 p.m. The feature event is race 10, the second edition of the Gene Riegle Memorial Pace, that will go postward at approximately 10 p.m.
Trainer Ron Burke will be trying to make it two straight after winning last year's inaugural race with Take It Back Terry. He'll be sending Easy Again from the trailing eight post. He enters this contest off a lifetime best of 1:50.2 at Scioto Downs on Aug. 9. Seven challengers will attempt to get a slice of the $30,000 purse pie.
A new event for this year is the Three Diamonds Open Pace for fillies and mares. It carries a $10,000 purse. Sectionline Yankee, a 5-year-old mare trained by Steve Bauder with six wins and over $50,000 in 2014 earnings, appears to be the one to beat. Seven rivals, led by Ron Burke-trained Rescue Team, will give her all she can handle. This will be race 8.
Three divisions of the Parshall Futurity round out the evening with the 2-year-old pacing colts and 2-year-old pacing fillies going for $7,800 each. Five 3-year-old filly trotters will vie for a $9,000 prize in the third race.
Racing also will be conducted Thursday, Aug. 21, with programs at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Friday, Aug. 22, at 12 noon. (Darke County Fair)
