Riley Rose's 1:49.3 win at Colonial fastest pace of fall meet

Esther Bier’s Riley Rose closed resolutely win a $10,000 winners-over feature in 1:49.3, the fastest pace of the fall season Wednesday at Colonial Downs.

Riley Rose got a perfect trip under the direction of Sean Bier, who won four races Wednesday night at Colonial. Riley Rose tucked into fourth early, 8 ¼ lengths behind pacesetter Camphor Hanover through an opening quarter in :26.

Camphor Hanover led down the long Colonial backstretch with Tintabella N sitting in the pocket. There was a gap of five lengths back to Look Lyndsay in third with Riley Rose racing right on her heels in fourth and Hot Fusion racing in last of the five-horse field.

Bier kept Riley Rose tucked at the rail in fourth as Camphor Hanover continued to speed around the turn on the lead. Camphor Hanover crossed the half in :54.1 and got the three quarters in 1:22.1 to emerge at the top of the stretch with a 1 ¼-length lead.

Riley Rose tipped to the outside near the end of the turn to launch her rally. Camphor Hanover was very game along the rail to hold the lead to deep stretch but Riley Rose’s closing kick was just too good and she pulled clear by three-quarters of a length. Look Lyndsay was another half-length back in third.

Riley Rose picked up her seventh win of the season and 21st overall from just 84 lifetime starts. The winner's share pushed her bankroll to $374,771 for trainer Art Bier.

Riley Rose just missed Scarlet Brocade’s track and world record of 1:49.2. The 5-year-old Real Artist mare also just missed her own lifetime mark of 1:49.2, set earlier this year at the Meadowlands. (Colonial Downs)
