Robert Corey Sr. dies

Robert D. Corey Sr., 71, of Columbiana, Ohio, passed away at 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at the Cleveland Clinic from complications of heart and lung ailments. Mr. Corey was born on June 27, 1934 in Cortland, Ohio, the son of Preston Robert and Bertha B. Nicklin Corey.

He moved to the local area in his youth. He was self-employed as a professional harness horse trainer, driver and owner for over 47 years and during that time he raced horses throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania and was a top competitor in the Ohio Colt Stakes Circuit. In 1992 he received the Distinguished Driver in Ohio Award as well as many other awards. He was well known for training 2 & 3 yr. old trotters.

He was a founding member of the Buckeye Fancy Feather Club and was honored for 50 years service in 2005. He was also owner of Corey Oil Products of Columbiana from 1981-1990. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Columbiana. He was past secretary of the Columbiana Rotary Club. He was a graduate of Michigan State Farrier School and was a Renowned Show Horse Trainer and was an outstanding Judge of Show Horses which he judged nationally and internationally, including the Royal Canadian Winter Horse Show.

Survivors include his wife, the former Inez M. Hostetter, whom he married June 27, 1952; a daughter Catherine and her husband Colonel (Ret) "Chip" McConville from Millwood, Virginia; four sons Robert Corey, Jr. and his wife Betty Jane of Felton, Delaware, Paul Corey and his wife Shawnie of Leetonia, Jay H. Corey and his wife Cheryl of Morgantown, West Virginia, and Thomas D. and his wife Cynthia Marie of Columbiana; a sister Mrs. Beatrice Johnson - Cicuto of Columbiana and a brother P. Earl Corey of Columbiana; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Glenn L. Corey.

Services will be at 1:00 pm Saturday, May 13, 2006 at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana with Rev. Steven K. Brown and Rev. David Conrad officiating. Burial will be in Columbiana Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-9 pm Friday, May 12, 2006 at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana and on Saturday, May 13, 2006 from 11:00 - 1:00 pm at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana. Family suggests that material tributes be made to the Youngstown Shrine Club to benefit the handicapped.
