Delaware Harness Racing Commission member Robert Lewis Everett II died Tuesday in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 57.

Mr. Everett was born Aug. 4, 1949, in Dover, son of EveLynn P. Ford Everett and the late Robert L. Everett. He was a 1967 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School, Smyrna, and a 1973 graduate of Delaware State University, formerly Delaware State College, Dover.

Mr. Everett was a social studies teacher for the Smyrna School District for 28 years. While at Smyrna High School he was the boys' varsity baseball coach and the girls' junior varsity basketball coach. He retired from teaching in 2001.

He was a candidate for the Delaware House of Representative in the 29th District in 2000. He was appointed to the Delaware Harness Racing Commission in 2001 by Gov. Ruth Ann Minner and was a member of the Association of Racing Commissioners International Inc. He was a member of the American Legion in Seaford.

Mr. Everett was a lifelong wildlife conservationist and an avid supporter and member of Ducks Unlimited. He helped to create water-filled enclosures and planted standing crops for wildlife in the winter months.

He raised English setters with his father and enjoyed upland hunting. He also trained and raced horses with his father and cousin. Upon retirement he owned and trained Labrador retrievers. His love of dogs was evident by the kind and caring treatment he showed in each step of their training.

Mr. Everett was well-known throughout Delaware and touched many lives and will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lewis Everett, in 2001.

He is survived by his mother, EveLynn P. Ford Everett; a sister, Martha Lynn Everett of Clayton; an aunt, Louise Everett of Clayton; and four cousins, Charles L. Everett of Kentucky, Chad Lee Everett of Maryland, Danny Everett and Terri Lou Everett, both of Clayton.

Remembrance services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Trader Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call three hours earlier. Burial will be in Sudlersville Cemetery, Sudlersville, Md.

In keeping with his love for hunting and the outdoors, those attending the visitation and services are welcome to wear camouflage.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Downs Chapel United Methodist Church, c/o Virginia Jones, 6703 Sudlersville Road, Marydel, Md. 21649.
