Rose Run Keepsake upsets Classic Lane at Pocono

It was a huge mile for Rose Run Keepsake Friday in the $28,000 Open Trot for fillies and mares at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. Over a sloppy track and with the rain falling, Rose Run Keepsake, driven by Mike Simons, nosed out 1-9 favorite Classic Lane (Jim Morrill Jr.) to win in 1:56.2.

Big Z Credit, piloted by Matt Kakaley, took the eight-horse field to the opening quarter in :28.3 with Classic Lane a close-up third before the latter became the new leader at the half, clicked off in :58.2.

Rose Run Keepsake was far back dead last at the quarter and half before Simons began making his move and gobbling up a lot of ground. The 4-year-old Armbro Laser mare, trained by Randy Bendis, was taken three wide down the backstretch, but was full of trot with Classic Lane getting to the three quarters in 1:27.1.

Classic Lane and Rose Run Keepsake battled to the wire with the longshot winning out for the second win in five starts in 2010. Classic Lane, a winner of more than $450,000 in 2009, was making her third start of the year.

Trainer Robert Reynolds Jr. had two wins and a second-place finish through the first 11 races of the 15-race card. Simons and Andrew McCarthy had driving doubles. (Pocono Downs)
