A crowd estimated at between 3,000-4,000 turned out for the opening program of the new Running Aces Harness Park in Minnesota Friday night, and many of them showed their enthusiasm by standing on the apron in snow squalls to watch the races. Former Major League Baseball manager Tom Kelly, who also owns harness horses, was on hand to congratulate the winner of the first race.
While the crowd was interested, their betting activity was modest as win-place-show pools were mostly only in the hundred-dollar range. Glitches in the tote system also occurred throughout the card and the track finally abandoned betting for the last race.
Running Acrs, a $65 million facility, will open its card rooms for poker play in July. Located aboaut 45 miles from the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, it will play host to pari-mutuel harness racing for 50 days this year.
The facility, which some have compared in size to Sports Creek Raceway in Michigan, has a five-eighths mile track and a barn area with stabling for 250 horses.
