Chicago-based driver Ryan Anderson has reportedly undergone successful surgery to repair a broken elbow and fractured wrist and ankle suffered in a race accident at Hawthorne Race Course Sunday, July 6. Anderson, 28, had seven screws inserted into his elbow by doctors at Loyola Medical Center as well as several pins in the wrist and ankle. He also needed 10 stitches to close a cut about his eye caused by his glasses when he hit the racetrack.
Anderson has only been racing in 2008 since late April after missing the first four months after breaking a leg in a race accident at Balmoral Park on Dec. 23.
The Hawthorne accident occured when a breaking horse in the two hole fell down the backstretch, causing Anderson, Tyler Buter and Mike Oosting to be dumped from their sulkies. Buter and Oosting sustained only minor injuries and continued racing while Anderson was taken immediately to the hospital.
