Sand Vic best in Crown

July 29, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Sand Vic went past the $1 million mark in career earnings with a 1:52.3 victory inthe $800,000 Breeders Crown Open Trot at the Meadowlands Saturday. It was the fifth win of the year for the 5-year-old son of Mr. Vic.

Sears rushed Sand Vic to the lead past the opening :27.3 quarter set by 2005 Hambletonian winner Vivid Photo (Roger Hammer). Sand Vic's stablemate Strong Yankee, driven by Mike Lachance, (both are trained by Trond Smedshammer) was following and then raced alongside. After a :55.4 half Sears was able to rate his charge to a :29 third quarter, reaching the three-quarters in 1:24.4.

Sand Vic then pulled away from Strong Yankee, opening room for Vivid Photo. Hammer got after his charge but the late rally fell a neck short. Corleone Kosmos (John Campbell), who had followed the cover of Strong Yankee, loomed bold but had to settle for third.

"I told Brian to drive him like he was the best and he drove him like he was the best," said Smedshammer afterward.

August Miedel owns Sand Vic, who increased his career earnings to $1,384,822 with the victory.
