Sand Vic holds in Nat Ray

August 05, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Sand Vic and driver Brian Sears dueled with Vivid Photo (Roger Hammer) and a late-charging Smooth Muscles (Jeff Gregory) down the stretch, but held on for a 1:51.3 win in the $300,000 Nat Ray Invitational Saturday at the Meadowlands.

Sand Vic, who finished second in this event last year, got to the front past the :27.3 quarter. He held off Vivid Photo past the :54.4 half and the 1:23 three-quarters. Vivid Photo spent much of the mile three wide before coming first-over. Peaceful Way (Trevor Ritchie) made a break after also sprinting three wide for the lead to the half.

Early leader Ripped (George Brennan) stepped back out for second. Smooth Muscles came hard late for third.

Sand Vic, a 5-year-old stallion by Mr. Vic, won an invitation to the World Cup Trot August 30, in Russia, with the win. Trainer Trond Smedshammer said he will not be going overseas.

“He’s got the Maple Leaf Trot coming up,” Smedshammer commented. “For us to go over there right now is a longshot.”

Sand Vic is owned by August Miedel of Florida. He has won six of nine starts this year, including the Breeders Crown last week.
