San Pail turned in the fastest trotting mile in Canada this season and equaled his career best clocking with a dominant 1:52.1 victory in Tuesday’s $42,000 Open Trot at Mohawk Racetrack.

Randy Waples eased the six-year-old San Pellegrino gelding off the gate from post four and when things settled in the backstretch, he brushed his charge to command past an opening half in :56.1.

Once on top, San Pail cruised past three-quarters in 1:25.1 and then
turned on the after jets with a :27-second final quarter to cap off the 2-1/2 length victory. Before He Cheats came first-over in the third quarter and finished a solid second with Sand Wyndham rounding out the top three.

The winner returned just $2.20 to win as the overwhelming top choice. San Pail, who is owned by trainer Rod Hughes along with Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry, Ontario, now has five wins in six starts this season and just over $118,000 in earnings to his credit. Lifetime, he has 27 wins and well over $1.1 million earned.

San Pail is one of 27 horses still eligible this year’s Maple Leaf Trot which comes up at Mohawk on Saturday, July 24. He is the defending champion in the event. (WEG)
