San Pail, the 2011 Horse of the Year in both Canada and the United States, continued to gear up for his seasonal pari-mutuel debut during Mohawk Racetrack's qualifying session on Wednesday.
With Randy Waples in the racebike, San Pail lined up in post five for race five, which featured a field of seven.
Waples gave the 9-year-old a conservative start, as he worked him into the four hole and watched Vimy Ridge (driven by Scott Zeron) carve the opening quarter in :28.2, the half in :58 and the three quarters in 1:27.2.
San Pail was first-up along the final turn and utilized a :28.2 final quarter to reel in the tempo setter. The gelded son of San Pellegrino won by 2 1/2 lengths in 1:56.2 over the fast track. (SC)
