In a dueling fight to the finish, Santanna Blue Chip and Jody Jamieson took the first C$130,326 division of the three-year-old open Simcoe Stakes in 1:53.2 Saturday at Mohawk. Keystone Horatio and Randy Waples were parked around the first turn and took the field past a :27.2 opening quarter, after which Santanna Blue Chip went to the front. A pedestrian half of :58.1 and three-quarters in 1:26.4 saw most of the field unchanged. Keystone Horatio found room around the rail and for a bit was actually in the lead but Santanna Blue Chip dug in and held him off by a nose. Get Out Of Dodge (Philip Hudon) finished third while Windsun Thunder (Roger Mayotte) got up for fourth. “We both (Keystone Horatio & Santanna Blue Chip) hadn’t raced since the Confederation Cup,” said Jamieson. “I wasn’t sure how tight his horse was, I knew my horse might not be quite as tight as he needed to be, but with the short field we kind of got lucky there.” “I thought we were going more, but I guess with the dark shades on it’s tough to tell how fast you’re going. My horse paced right to the wire…Down the stretch it’s hard to shake good horses no matter how fast you’re going…My horse was good today, should be a good prep for the (Little Brown) Jug.” Santanna Blue Chip is owned by Carl & Jody Jamieson, Jeffrey Gillis and the George Arthur Stable.
