Sarandon Blue Chip, runner-up in last week’s elimination, used a first-over trip to claim victory in the Miss New Jersey for sophomore filly pacers Saturday in 1:50.1. The Western Ideal filly, driven by David Miller, picked up the winner’s share of the $125,000 purse with a lifetime best effort. John Campbell and Mikeleh, 47-1 longshots, were second, followed by Pirouette Hanover.
Early action on the front highlighted the day’s fourth race. After the gate folded, Blackjack Princess, Child’s Play and favorite Rockaround Sue each took turns on the front through fractions of :27 and :54. Out and moving before the half, Sarandon Blue Chip and Miller were well-positioned turning for home, sitting first up. In the stretch, the tandem overtook Rockaround Sue and cruised to victory.
Bred by Blue Chip Bloodstock Inc. and owned by trainer Casie Coleman in partnership with Tom Hill, the sophomore earned her third seasonal victory. Unraced at two, Sarandon Blue Chip increased her earnings to just shy of $160,000 in eight starts. Earlier this year she won the New Jersey Sire Stakes final.
