Grand Circuit action at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield got underway on Tuesday following the cancellation of Monday’s program due to rain. In the biggest shocker of the afternoon came in the $62,000 Review Stakes for 3-year-old colt trotters when Brooke Nickells directed the 24-1 longshot Sargent Volo to a nose victory over the heavily-favored Mr. Cantab and driver Andy Miller in 1:57.3.
A son of Self Possessed, Sargent Volo is trained by Nickells, who also shares ownership with Jack Holton. It was his third win of the year in 10 starts as he edged Mr. Cantab, who finished second behind Federal Flex in a Stanley Dancer Memorial division at the Meadowlands last month.
Odds On Riesling, a daughter of Artsplace, led gate to wire to win the $31,000 Review for 2-year-old filly pacers in 1:59.1, edging the Peter Wrenn-driven Artcam by a head. Josh Sutton drove the winner for trainer Robin Schadt and owner Odds On Racing. Perrito Caliente, a son of Art Major, scored a 1:56.4 victory in the $31,000 Review for 2-year-old colt pacers for driver Travis Seekman, trainer Joe Seekman and owner Sawgrass Farms.
In the $53,000 Review for 2-year-old colt trotters, Marcus Miller drove Flashback to a 1:59.2 victory. Erv Miller trains the son of Classic Photo for owner H.W. Wright and Geis Enterprises.
Andy Miller drove Smooth Silver, a daughter of Western Hanover, to a 1:54.1 victory in the $32,000 Review for 3-year-old filly pacers, with longshot Parklane Dream second for driver Brandon Simpson. Erv Miller trains the winner for owner Brittany Farms.
Andy Miller also drove Over My Head to a 1:57.2 win in the $34,000 Review for 3-year-old colt pacers. John Butenschoen trains the son of I Am A Fool for owners Greg Gary and Shawn Swenson.
Just two freshman filly pacers lined up behind the gate in the $25,000 Review and it was even-money Pure Platinum who defeated 1-5 favorite Escrow Blue Chip by a half-length in 2:03.2. Wrenn trains and drives Pure Platinum, and also shares ownership of the daughter of Conway Hall with Gene Oldford and Briskwood Racing.
