Scar to remove lights, rail

August 31, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

After two recent racing accidents at Scarborough Downs, including one that resulted in the death of the 6-year-old trotter Highway Hanover after he slammed into the hub rail, the racetrack reportedly will removed both the hub rail and its lighting system. Scarborough owner Sharon Terry was quoted as saying that no decision had been reach as to whether a new lighting system would be installed, which would result in the end of the track racing at night.

Highway Hanover was killed after falling in a race, and then after getting back up turned into the opposite direction toward the oncoming field of horses. Highway Hanover angled away from the field and hit the hub rail head on, killing him instantly. Afterward the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association asked racetrack management to remove the hub rail.
