Scharf gives scholarships

Nicole Baillie of East Windsor, N.J., and Michelle Miller of New Berlin, N.Y., are the first recipients of the Gallo Blue Chip Scholarships. The scholarships, $10,000 for Baille and $5,000 for Miller, have been made possible by Martin Scharf, owner of 2000 Horse of the Year Gallo Blue Chip who retired from racing in June as the richest pacer in history with earnings of $4,260,959.



Scharf announced his scholarship plan during retirement ceremonies for Gallo Blue Chip at the Meadowlands June 4. He originally intended to give one $10,000 scholarship to the children of a harness horse trainer or caretaker licensed in New York or New Jersey. But when more than 20 students applied for the scholarship he changed his mind. "With so many highly qualified candidates, I just wanted to go with two scholarships this year," Scharf said.



Baillie, 20, who is studying elementary education at Goucher College in Maryland, is the daughter of caretaker Pamela Baillie, who took care of 1995 and '96 Pacer of the Year Jenna's Beach Boy.



Miller, 21, is studying public relations and journalism at the Utica College of Syracuse University.
