After going a light training mile with Deweycheatumnhowe at Goshen Historic Track Monday morning, Ray Schnittker remains hopeful of still being able to start the colt in the $500,000 Breeders Crown final Saturday night at the Meadowlands. Schnittker earlier acknowledged the luck of not having eliminations for the 3-year-old colt trot as it was likely Deweycheatumnhowe would have been forced to watch the Crown event on the sidelines after developing an abscess in his throat last week. Schnittker’s wife, veterinarian Dr. Janet Durso, recommended taking Dewey to the Cornell University Veterinary Clinic on Thursday, Nov. 20, after the colt developed a fever, and the diagnosis there revealed an abscess in his throat.
Schnittker said if Dewey now scopes clean he plans on bringing the colt to the Meadowlands Tuesday for a training trip on Wednesday. He added he will take Dewey’s situation on a day-to-day basis as any final decision would not have to be made until Friday night when the horse is due in detention. The Hambletonian winner and defending Breeders Crown champ drew post eight in the 11-horse final.
