Scioto cancels 2008 Jug Preview

First raced in 1972, the Jug Preview has been taken off the 2008 stakes calendar at Scioto Downs. Held annually in early September, the race has been used as a final prep for some horses heading to Delaware two weeks later for the Little Brown Jug.

“We are just going to give it a year off. It’s not like it has been canceled and gone forever,” Scioto Downs’ race secretary Stacy Cahill explained to harnessracing.com. “With all the competition that time from the surrounding states…I’m only going to get the third or fourth tier of out-of-state horses. I’d get the Ohio-breds, but since I have the finals of the Ohio Sire Stakes that same night, it doesn’t behoove me to have both.”

The 2008 Jug Preview would have been held on Ohio Sire Stakes Super Night on Saturday, Sept. 6. Cahill said to fill the void on that card she plans on re-introducing the Heart of Ohio trots and Capital City paces for older Ohio-bred horses. The races will have three eliminations and a final, with the horses that win the earlier Scarlet & Gray finals at Northfield Park earning an automatic spot in the Sept. 6 final.

“We are at the point in Ohio where we have to take care of the people who have actually stayed in Ohio, since there are so few of them left,” said Cahill.
