Speaking at a press conference at Scioto Downs Thursday morning arranged by the racetrack’s parent company, Mountaineer Gaming Inc., chief operating officer Stacy Cahill said the Columbus track could close without legislative relief that includes the introduction of video lottery terminals. Cahill spoke briefly to the gathering that consisted of three Columbus television stations as well as Midland Acres owner and past Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association president Dr. John Mossbarger and horseman Dan Ater. She noted the tough times Scioto has been persevering through and its financial losses. When asked by one of the TV reporters as to any possible timeframe for the track’s closing, Cahill replied that she would not speculate as to the future. The issue of VLTs at Ohio racetracks is scheduled to be placed on the November ballot so that voters in the state could decide if expanding gaming should be allowed.
