Scorpion Moon matched the fastest ever trotting time at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in winning a $22,000 Open Handicap on Tuesday afternoon.
Leaving from the outside post in a field of eight, Scorpion Moon, the 4-5 favorite with Eric Goodell in the bike for trainer Tracy Brainard, took over the lead with a first-over move just before the half. From there, the 7-year-old gelding kept extending the lead the rest of the way and crossed the line 3 3/4 lengths ahead in 1:52.4. Likeabatoutahell finished second with Bet To Win getting the show.
Fractional times for the mile were :27.1, :56.2, and 1:24.2, with Scorpion Moon’s winning time of 1:52.4 matching the fastest ever trot on the Pocono oval, first established last year by the mare Mystical Sunshine. The 1:52.4 time also set a new Pocono standard for older trotting geldings, breaking the mark of 1:53.1 previously held by Woody Woodrow. The career-best win continued an amazing recent hot streak by the gelding sired by Armbro Scorpion. It was his fifth consecutive win and his sixth in seven races this year, all against Open competition at Pocono, Tioga, and Vernon. Owned by Brainard and Andrew Herzog, Scorpion Moon now owns 45 career victories in 120 starts with career earnings over $294,000. (Pocono Downs)
