Search the attic, cash in on old treasures

Harness Tracks of America (HTA) is gearing up for its 31st annual art show and auction, to be held at The Red Mile in Lexington this fall, and is seeking consignments of rare old works of harness racing art.

In recent shows treasures from private consignors have brought high prices at the HTA auction. Two original oils by George Ford Morris brought $22,000 and $18,000 and two original Morris charcoals sold for $19,000 and $10,000. Three early Robert Dickey watercolors sold for $20,000, a set of Gean Smith oils brought $15,500, and a Richard Stone Reeves oil sold last fall for $9,000.

Some collectors have "traded in" original paintings purchased at the HTA auction, reselling them and purchasing new works. Others have consigned family heirlooms that no longer fit in their current decor.

This year's show and auction, as usual, will feature oil paintings, watercolors, bronzes, woodcarvings, posters and other works on harness racing by contemporary American and European artists, and rare Currier & Ives trotting prints including one of the largest private collections to sell in recent years, with very hard-to-find lithographs and a special collection of Currier comics.
