Season's records set

Return Home
August 12, 2005 | Print View

Three national season's records were set and driver Andy Miller brought home six winner's on the 12-race card as racing at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield got underway Friday afternoon with Illinois State Fair Colt Stakes eliminations for 2 year olds.

Miller began the day winning the first three races--all eliminations of the 2-year-old filly trot--for his brother, trainer Ervin Miller. He scored with Vickie (Valley Victor) in 1:59.3, Miss Imperial (Imperial Victory) in 1:58.4 and Victory's Finess (Valley Victor) in 2:00.1. The latter was coming off a third-place finish in the Merrie Annabelle last week at the Meadowlands.

Miller picked up his fourth win with Fox Valley Cayenne (International Chip) in 1:59.1 in a 2-year-old colt trot, and his fifth came with Fox Valley Tribal (Sportsmaster) in 1:52 in a 2-year-old colt pace elim.

But Miller's biggest victory was his sixth as he scored with Lucky's Z Tam in another 2-year-old colt pace elim in a track and national season's record 1:50.2. The Cole Muffler colt, who is trained by David McCaffrey, was making just his third start of the year after finishing third and first in conditioned races at Hawthorne.

Miller wasn't the only big news at Springfield Friday. Two fillies bred, owned and trained by Lynn Wilfong paced the fastest miles of the season for their age, sex and gait. First, You Make Me Smile, with Mike Oosting in the bike, scored in 1:52.1, then in the day's final event, Join The Party and Sam Widger got up in the final stride to score in 1:52.3. Going into the day the season's record was 1:52.4. Both fillies are by Cape Crusader.

Other highlights included a season's record for 2-year-old gelding trotters of 1:56.2 by Sonny Knew (Valley Victory) and Eric Ledford, Indy Pendent Bay (Incredible Finale) remaining undefeated in six starts with a 1:53.1 effort for Dean Magee in a 2-year-old filly pace elim and Hot N Sporty (Sportsmaster) keeping his seven-race career unblemished with a 1:53.2 victory for Tony Morgan.
