The second session of the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale on Thursday night had a distinctly slower pace than the opening night on Wednesday, and after the last horse to sell was hammered down, the numbers showed the average price for the second session had declined 10.6 percent from the previous year. The first two sessions combined for this year's sale show a 5.7 decline in average.
The 142 horses sold in the second session--exactly the same number as in last year's second session--generated a gross of $8.7 million for an average price of $61,605. The average for last year's second session was $68,915.
The trotting colt sector remained the strongest at the sale as 41 trotting colts realized an average of $75,536, with 41 pacing colts the second strongest part of the mark with an average of $62,585.
The sale topper in the second session was Through The Night, a Credit Winner-Day For Night colt, who fetched a bid of $310,000 to Anderson Farms Ontario Inc. The colt was consigned by Hunterton Sales Agency.
The first session of this year's Lexington Selected Yearling Sale finished with its average price up 2.3 percent over the same 2007 session.
The sale continues on Friday and Saturday nights and concludes on Sunday.
