The 2011 Horse of the Year in the U.S. and Canada San Pail, a three-time Maple Leaf Trot winner, returned to victory lane at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening following an extensive layoff.
The 9-year-old trotting son of San Pellegrino, who was sidelined for over a year with a right-hind ankle injury, captured the $34,000 Preferred Trot in his second start off the shelf in 1:53.4.
The 52-time winner led from start to finish through panels of :28, :56.4 and 1:24.4, before dashing away from his rivals in deep stretch to score the victory. Knows Nothing (Jody Jamieson) finished second with Catch The Dream (Sylvain Filion) third.
Trained by Rod Hughes for owners Glenn Van Camp and Hughes Stables Inc, San Pail now has $3,012,029 in career earnings. He paid $5.90 to win as the second choice. (WEG)
