Trainer Jimmy Takter told harnessracing.com Wednesday morning that it was a “last-minute decision” to enter See You At Peelers in Saturday night’s Breeders Crown eliminations at Woodbine Racetrack, and he did so only after the 3-year-old filly pacer went an “awesome” training mile at his New Jersey farm early Tuesday morning.
“She trained awesome yesterday; she was fantastic,” said Takter. “She’s looking super. She’ll probably be a little short into (the elim) but hopefully she’ll go a good race and make the final.”
After an undefeated 13-for-13 freshman season that led to 2-Year-Old Filly Pacer of the Year honors, See You At Peelers came back strong as ever in 2011 as she rolled off another nine straight victories to stretch her unbeaten streak to 22. But she then finished a tired sixth in the Nadia Lobell final Aug. 29 at The Meadows for her first-ever defeat.
See You At Peelers then traveled to Vernon Downs six days later for a New York Sire Stakes leg, and although she crossed the wire first she was disqualified and placed second for causing interference in the stretch.
Takter then discovered See You At Peelers had a higher-than-normal heart rate, so he took the filly to Cornell University where it was determined she was suffering from a heart problem. She was then placed on medication, but at that point any possible chance of racing her against the colts in the Sept.22 Little Brown Jug was off the table.
Although Takter first believed it virtually impossible that See You At Peelers would recover enough to be entered in the Breeders Crown, he turned a bit more optimistic following a qualifying victory Oct. 14 at Freehold with the filly wearing a heart monitor. He then decided to take See You At Peelers on one final training session on Tuesday morning, with a 10:30 a.m. deadline looming for the entry box.
“I called her entry in at 10:28,” Takter said. “It was a last-minute decision I had to make to make sure she was OK and be competitive.”
Takter said if no elims were needed for the Crown 3-Year-Old Filly Pace he would have qualified See You At Peelers to Harrah’s Chester on Thursday, Oct. 20. However, with 15 entered there are two elims, with See You At Peelers drawing post two in the second with Marcus Johansson driving.
