Serena upsets Pampered Princess

November 24, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Southwind Serena, a 50-1 shot, sat on the back of Pampered Princess and then sprinted by that foe to win the $500,000 Breeders Crown 3-Year-Old Filly Trot in 1:55.2. Yannick Gingras picked up his first Breeders Crown victory with the win behind Southwind Serena.

John Campbell sent Pampered Princess away from the gate strongly from post six, but Gingras left hard as well with Southwind Serena from post eight. Southwind Serena took command, but as the first quarter flashed a pedestrian :29.3, Campbell moved to the front with Pampered Princess.

Campbell rated the half to :59 and reached the three-quarter mark in 1:28.1, with Southwind Serena trotting in the pocket. The first-over Danae bounded into a break early in the last turn, leaving Michelle's Angel first-over and Falls For You following second-over.

At the top of the stretch Pampered Princess was still trotting strongly, but by the middle of the stretch she began to tire. Southwind Serena slipped off the pylons and edged past Pampered Princess for the victory, just her third of the season in 19 starts.

Per Henriksen trains Southwind Serena for George Lowenfeld's Andrea Lea Racing Stables of Quebec. Lowenfeld bought the filly by Varenne as a yearling, but watched as the filly struggled to keep from breaking stride as a freshman. Henriksen took over training "Serena" and the filly finally got her act together.
