Dr. Barry Betts, a longtime veterinarian based at The Meadows, died suddenly Friday night shortly after watching his son play in a high school baseball game. He was 56.
A native of Barnesville, Ohio, Dr. Betts was the son of horseman Richard "Gibby" Betts. Dr. Betts was a graduate of The Ohio State University. He established the Hickory Ridge Equine Center in Washington, Pa., and practiced veterinary medicine there and at The Meadows racetrack for 30 years.
Dr. Betts was active in local sports, coaching and supporting the teams that his three sons played on. On the night of his death he and his wife, Kim, had attended an out-of-town baseball game to watch their youngest son, Scott, a junior at Chartiers-Houston High School.
In addition to his father and wife, Dr. Betts is survived by his mother, Corinne Betts; and two other sons, Timothy and Andrew. He was predeceased by his sister, Cynthia.
Visitation will be held on Monday night from 7-9 pm and Tuesday from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm at William G. Neal Funeral Home, 925 Allison Ave., Washington, PA 15301. Pastor Joe DiDonato, the chaplain at The Meadows, will officiate the funeral service at the Church of Christ, 700 Allison Ave., Washington.
