Sha Daisy Sunset was victorious in the featured $22,000 Mares Invitational Friday night at Hoosier Park. Controlling the pace with driver Don Irvine Jr. in the sulky, the duo fought back in the stretch to win, pacing the mile in 1:53.1, a new lifetime mark.
“I was glad we were able to get to the front before going into the first turn,” said Irvine Jr. “I didn’t want to get caught on the outside like we did last week. She (Sha Daisy Sunset) is getting better every week since she moved here at the beginning of the season.”
Breaking from post position five, Sha Daisy Sunset wasted no time flying past the grandstand for the early lead. As the field of nine headed into the clubhouse turn, Sha Daisy Sunset was there to open up the first quarter in :27. Sha Daisy Sunset continued to control the pace as she strolled down the backstretch. However, More Taxes and driver Trent Stohler came calling for the lead, taking the front by a nose around the final turn. Sha Daisy Sunset fired right back in the stretch with authority and opened up to a one-quarter length lead. The game effort was all that was necessary to go on to victory. A fast charging Marks-Mindy and driver Joe Putnam finished second. Bananih, with driver Mike Neafus, rounded out the trifecta. Sha Daisy Sunset returned $10.60, $5.20, and $4.60 for the victory. This was her second Hoosier Park invite win in her last four starts. With the $11,000 winner’s share, the 6-year-old passes the $100,000 mark in career earnings. The daughter of Indian Sunset is four for 11 this season for owner-trainer Daniel Taneyhill of Swartz Creek, Mich. (Hoosier Park)
