When it comes to talking about the recent world-record performance by Shadow Play, the morning line favorite in Saturday’s $350,000 Delvin Miller Adios at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, Mark Ford is quick to point out that all the credit for the 3-year-old colt's success should go to Dr. Ian Moore of Prince Edward Island. “Dr. Moore owns and trains Shadow Play,” said Ford, who is a highly successful trainer in the United States. He sent Shadow Play down to me for his starts at The Meadows and Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. "I’m looking forward to his race Saturday afternoon. Knock on wood, he came out of that elimination race last Friday in good shape. He’s as sound as he could be.
“Dr. Moore has done a fabulous job with Shadow Play, who is one beautiful horse." Ford continued. "It seems like he takes real well to the racing surface at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. I would have never dreamed of that world record time in his elimination race.”
Sand Shooter won one of the three $50,000 elimination races with a time of 1:48.2, the world mark for a 3-year-old pacing colt on a five-eighths mile track and equaling the second fastest time ever paced by any aged pacer on a five-eighths mile racing surface.
Ford said he was really impressed by Shadow Play’s first race in the states after coming down from Mohawk Raceway in Canada. It was in the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes on July 1 at the Northeastern Pennsylvania track. Leaving from the nine hole, Sand Shooter was parked the entire mile with fractions of 26.2, 53.2 and 1:21 and still finished third with a time of 1:50, 2 3/4 lengths back of Upfront Hannahs Boy.
Prior to his Adios elimination race, Ford said Shadow Play may have “jumped" a shadow in going on a break in a sires stakes race at the Meadows July 25. In that race, Shadow Play finished fourth but was placed fifth.
Dr. Moore, a veterinarian, has trained several good Standardbreds over the years, including Astronomical and Impeccable.
A Shadow Play win in the Adios would not only make one trainer happy but also Mark Ford, the American “diplomat,” and the horse’s other owner-trainer Dr. Moore along with Canadian friends and co-owners, including former Montreal Canadiens hockey great defenseman and NHL Hall of Famer Serge Savard.
