Shake Away takes DD Open

Return Home
February 22, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Shake Away avenged last week's setback to win the $26,000 Mares Open Handicap Pace while Crossfire N used the passing lane to take the $21,000 Mares Jr. Open on Tuesday at Dover Downs.

It was déjà vu in the feature. Toy Dragon, reined by Steve Warrington, worked hard to get the lead from post eight and cut out the fractions as Shake Away worked her way up from the tail end following the cover of Ann Other Porsche. Approaching the three-quarters Brad Hanners urged Ann Other Porsche alongside the leader with Jim King moving Shake Away three wide.

The trio battled around the final turn with Ann Other Porsche retreating and Shake Away coming alongside Toy Dragon. As in last week's top distaff event, the duo waged a war down the stretch with Shake Away finally getting a head in front at the wire in 1:52.1. Super-tough Toy Dragon, second, had a half-length on fast finishing Apache Dame with Tony Morgan.

The victory was the fifth of the year in eight starts, with two seconds and a third, for Shake Away, a 6-year-old daughter of Dream Away. Leased by Jim King, Shake Away has now won $76,380 in 2006 and $285,295 in her two-season career on the track.

In the $21,000 Mares Jr. Open, as she has done occasionally in the past, Crossfire N left fast, relinquished the lead, and sat second until turning for home before unleashing a powerful burst dashing along the passing lane to score a victory. This time Mike Cole guided the 1:52.3 winner for Wendy Crissman and 49 Racing Stables.
