Sharky Spur, a $19,000 yearling purchase, reached $1 million in career earnings Thursday night at The Meadows after a second-place finish in a conditioned pace. A winner of the Dan Patch Invitational, the 10-year-old son of Cam's Card Shark has started 232 times in his racing career and finished on the board in 129 of those starts. His career best mark is 1:49.4 and his biggest money-winning season on the track came in 2002, when he earned $220,057.
The popular pacer Sharky Spur was saluted after passing the $1 million mark at The Meadows. Owned by Roy Davis, Sharky Spur has raced every year since he made his debut as a 2 year old. Since 2003 he's worked two jobs, you might say. He began serving as a stallion in 2002 and his first foals were born in 2003. He bred mares again this year and presently has 30 offspring.
Sharky Spur needed to finish first or second in the Thursday night race to eclipse $1 million in earnings. He sat a perfect two-hole trip behind Schemes and driver Dave Palone throughout much of the mile. Schemes was pressured for most of the mile, and as they hit the top of the stretch Sharky Spur actually took a short lead, but Schemes fought back gamely and won, by a nose in 1:55.4.
Trained by the Stillings Stable, Sharky Spur has been driven by Richard Stillings in almost every one of his races. (The Meadows press release)
