California Sires Stakes Action for the filly sophomores, on both gaits, were featured at Cal Expo on Friday night (October 30), on which Sheila's Dream and Castle Oaks were winners.

In the first of the two $15,000 divisions, this for the trotters, Sheila's Dream made every pole a winning one for driver Rick Plano.

Coasting home in the stretch while only barely urged in the final sixteenth of a mile, Sheila's Dream scored ($3.60) easily by 3-3/4-lengths. Owned by Maurice Sigmon in partnership with trainer George Reider, Sheila's Dream stopped the timer at 1:59.3. Dani California (Tim Maier) finished in second, and Firewall (Rich Wojcio), who didn't find her best stride until late, closed fast to be another half of one-length farther back, in third.

"Off the first-half in 1:00.1 she did it easy," said Plano. It was a pretty simple race for her and she was due to have a race like this because she had bad luck in the Sires Stakes during the summer."

In the pacing stakes, Castle Oaks was fastest of all.

Trainer Tim Maier moved his filly to the outside past the seven-eighths mile pole and asked for pace and Castle Oaks promptly exploded like a bullet with just under a sixteenth of a mile to go.

Zooming past the pace-setting Silver Bloom (Rick Plano) late, Castle Oaks won ($7.60) by two lengths. Owned by Denise Maier in partnership with breeder Alan Kirschenbaum, Castle Oaks equaled a lifetime best with a 1:55.3 clocking. Silver Bloom had to settle for second, and Haggin Oaks (James Kennedy) finished another 2-1/2 lengths farther back, in third. (Cal Expo)
