She’s A Flirt, a daughter of the top Indiana-sired filly Sheezhomewardbound, won her first career race Wednesday, May 2, at Hoosier Park for trainer-driver Dan Shetler. Coming from sixth position at three-quarters of a mile, She’s A Flirt displayed superb closing ability to win in 1:59.4. “Everybody remembers her mother,” said Shetler, who worked with Sheezhomewardbound throughout her career. “She was an excellent race mare. She’s A Flirt is her first foal.”
Getting away in good position in the middle of the pack was She’s A Flirt. Taking the early initiative and the lead was Loyz Trot’n Legend. Loyz Trot’n Legend maintained her advantage through the top of the stretch. Opting to keep She's A Flirt away from the front, Shetler allowed the filly to gain experience racing in between horses.
Midway through the stretch, She’s A Flirt and Shetler found a hole and quickly took to the lead. The pair made quick work of the field, using a quick surge on the outside to seal the victory. She’s A Flirt trotted the final quarter-mile in :28.4.
“She likes racing from behind,” added Shetler. “She’s very intelligent for the amount of experience she has. I plan to race her all season if she stays sound and progresses. I didn’t want to use her too much tonight being her first start of the year.”
She’s A Flirt was entered in just one race last season, finishing sixth in the $50,000 Kentucky Sire Stakes Final. Although she is not eligible for some of the bigger 3-year-old events, Shetler believes with more racing she can do some good things this year. He has the well-bred filly entered in many Kentucky stakes races later this season.
“(She’s A Flirt) was a bit small so I didn’t do much with her last year,” said Shetler. “That’s why we only entered one race. She’s a very smart filly, much like her mother. She shares the same disposition, work ethic, and acts the same way around the barn as her mother did.”
Bowl Stables, Dan Shetler Jr., and Mitchell Rosenthal own She’s A Flirt and also campaigned her mother. Sheezhomewardbound had good success in the Indiana Sire Stakes throughout her career, winning the Sire Stakes final as a 2 year old in 1997 and the championship for 3 year olds the following year.
